Our wedding day feels like it happened just a few months ago but in reality we are just a couple of weeks away from our one-year anniversary. As a little girl playing dress up and imaginary games I’d always dreamt of one day marrying my prince charming on a beautiful island with breath taking views and guaranteed sunshine, what else could you ask for?
After looking at various venues in Italy, Croatia and Greece we kept on returning to the iconic blue domed churches adorned with white crosses and white washed architectural backgrounds overlooking the most scenic backdrop. Santorini ticked all boxes. Our main priority for our wedding day was for a relaxed atmosphere with great food, drinks and music, not to forget the breathtaking views.
What Inspired me?
We were inspired by industrial gold’s, greenery and geometric shapes. Both our ceremony and reception venue were truly magical. We chose natural colours as not to distract away from the jaw dropping views.
From my classical fairy-tale gown with glistening lace, to the mirrored lighting upon entering our reception venue; the welcome table and greenery displayed amongst our sweetheart table and guest tables, my overall vision for our wedding came together perfectly. I remember taking a moment while seated to look around our reception venue and savour in a truly special moment with those whom we care about so dearly. It was truly remarkable, with a guest count of 138, the atmosphere felt intimate.
The First Look
Our wedding ceremony was scheduled for 5pm due to the intense August sunshine. This was a perfect time to start our day as we had more time to relax and get ready. I decided to incorporate a first look photography, a moment for my husband and I to see each other before the ceremony. I managed to squeeze a first look with my brides’ babes, mum and also my dad. This presented me with the opportunity to gift them with little mementos.
Our first look photographs worked perfectly for our timing of the day as it meant we got to spend more time with guests during the reception party.
Our Magical Day
I have always pictured a day full of happy faces, perfect weather and heavenly views. Santorini ticked all the boxes for our dream wedding. Choosing a wedding venue without ever seeing it and going with recommendations from friends and family was the best decision. We chose a venue, which overlooked the Aegean Sea. Santo Winery was just perfect for our ceremony.
Our reception venue was more intimate with our very own private beach, comfy seating areas and palm trees, the most romantic and spectacular setting for our private party. I remember listening to the sounds of the waves as we dined to chilled jazz music from the likes of Jimmy Cobb to Horace Silver’s Song for my farther. From a specially selected Greek BBQ menu to an open bar our guests were happy and merry. We loved the relaxed vibes.
Planning Our Day
I am not going to lie; I thoroughly enjoyed the planning stages of our destination wedding. Everything ran smoothly as we booked both our ceremony and reception venue 18months in advance. Sticking to time schedules allowed a stress free planning, we sent our saves the dates to family and friends 16 months before the big day, they thought it was way too early but it allowed them plenty of time to prepare.
Looking back we invited 150 guests and almost all guests made it to our wedding. Another stress free planning tool used was a wedding app and website called Appycouple which took the burden off us. The website allows you to inform guests about the wedding day itinerary from the hotels, travel arrangements to your electronic save the dates and more.
The hardest part about planning our destination wedding was the budget! I struggled to keep on top of our budget. Seriously I had two wedding dresses, does that sound like someone who sticks to the plan? On a more serious note definitely agree a budget cap with your husband to be and by all means please try and stick to it. A cost saving tip is DIY decor, gather your family and friends to help you make some cost saving table décor and place settings. One good thing I did was save a lot of money on our personalised place settings, which was made by a very good friend of mine at no cost what so ever.
When it came to planning the day we decided on having a sweetheart top table instead of the traditional top table. This table consisted of just my husband and I, our parents sat on a table directly opposite ours with their closest friends and our bridal party sat on tables next to theirs and close to us. As selfish as it sounds the sweetheart table allowed guests to come to us for their well wishes and photo opportunities on their way to the scrumptious BBQ buffet. This saved us time going around to thank our guests.
If I could plan our wedding day again I wish we could extend the time to party all the way until dawn. Our little guests were still on the dance floor at 3am with sleepy eyes defying their parents. They loved our special day as much as the adults. If I had a magic wand I would do every single thing again.
A wedding abroad is truly magical; we spent a week with friends and family and have so many fond memories. Memories which will last a lifetime, thanks to choosing a special location for our day. Our guests are still talking about our wedding till this day.
